It is estimated that there are about 7-8,000 businesses cleaning carpets in the UK operating under a variety of headings including window cleaners, carpet fitters, general household cleaning services, commercial cleaning contractors. VCRS Limited is one of only 100 or so companies who are an IICRC certified firm AND an NCCA member AND a Woolsafe Organisation member. That makes us about one in 700 or so, but the levels of training of each of our team and Adam’s trained carpet inspector, instructor and involvement in the industry puts us way ahead of even the best.

The State of our Industry

Training for many carpet and upholstery cleaners in our industry begins and ends with learning how to operate a carpet cleaning machine and having a few practice sessions on a couple of carpets before they are present themselves as a trained operative. After that it is a case of trial and error whereby they continue cleaning carpets and upholstery until they ruin something and have to deal with an unhappy customer or an insurance claim. The training they get rarely extends to understanding how cleaning chemistry works, the fibre content and construction methodology of carpets and fabrics, how different fibres and fabrics respond to water or cleaning solutions, cleaning methods and techniques. They usually have little or no understanding of drying related issues and have only rudimentary stain removal skills which extend no further than that of the average consumer. Many of the risks and potential for damage are not conveyed to the operator by the poorly trained employer or are simply not understood by the even more poorly trained employee. At best, the results of the poor work that follows just ends up fuelling the "old wives tales" which cause people to defer badly needed cleaning services which would make their carpets and upholstery look better and perform better for longer!! At worst, carpets and upholstery can shrink or stretch, warp, buckle, split, discolour, dye bleed, distort or change in texture.

It is not unusual for us to hear how some consumers experience poor results, drying periods extending into several days with the usual accompanying mal odour issues (mostly from bacterial growth or from mould!!). It is usually too late by then as the payment (often cash with no receipt) has been made. That is even after the bold and brash claims that the cleaning service "cleans corners and does not cut them" or "it will be the best clean your furnishings have ever had or your money back". Consumers suffering from "buyers remorse" is often a consequence of using poor quality cleaners whose sole aim is instant financial reward and little or no regard for the customer and long term business relationships.

The fault often lies in the consumer believing that cleaning of valuable soft furnishings is somehow a low skilled task and will often accept a price over the telephone from a business which has no idea of what they are getting themselves into. This is exacerbated by the shear number of bad cleaners who do not understand the risks of the work they are undertaking and legitimise the idea that prices can be given over the telephone without seeing for themselves the challenges involved in the task being requested.
