Sisal, seagrass, jute and coir carpets are among the most difficult to clean. This is because these vegetable based fibre carpets are prone to severe damage by water and water based spills. Sisal (from Agave Sisalana plant), seagrass (natural plant fibre from China/Vietnam region) and coir (fibres from coconut husks) are among the most absorbent of all the carpet fibres on the market and although they appear to have only the natural colour they were dried to, they are in fact often bleached and re-dyed in the manufacturing process which means they can lose colour and/or discolour very easily.

There is only one cleaning method approved for cleaning these vegetable based fibres. That method is the absorbent compound method. VCRS specialises in sisal, seagrass and coir carpet cleaning.

It should be noted that sisal and seagrass carpets need to be kept clean or cleaned regularly to prolong its appearance.

It should also be noted that carpets should be cleaned regularly e.g. every 12-24 months (subject to use) to ensure that they looks better for longer within their overall design life (reference source IICRC S100 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Cleaning and Maintenance of Textile Floor Coverings.)
